Autistic Disorder (AD) and Asperger's Syndrome (AS): Two Disorders or One Spectrum?
The disorders all shared pervasive neurological problems that had onset in childhood and persisted throughout the life span (Rett's disorder, childhood disintegration disorder, autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder [also referred to as Asperger's syndrome] and PDD NOS [not otherwise specified]).
However, there has been ongoing debate whether autistic disorder (AD) and Asperger's syn- drome (AS) represented two distinct disorders or whether the disorders represented different end points along a continuum of autistic spectrum disorders (ASD).
The previous DSM criteria provided a reliable system of identification of PDD, especially for children who were 3 years of age or older; however, identification of the subtypes within PDD (autistic disorder, AS, childhood disintegrative disorder and PDD NOS) continued to pose a challenge to clinicians (Miller & Ozonoff, 1997; Szatmari, Archer, Fisman, Streiner & Wilson, 1995).
The debate as to whether autism and AS are two unique disorders continues to be a contro- versial one, and some theorists prefer to discuss autistic disorders on the spectrum as separate from Asperger's syndrome for several reasons.
